Puerto Vallerta, Mexico

These are sketches I made recently while sitting on the beach in Mexico. It is such an interesting undertaking to paint nature. It is a challenge to capture images of things which are ever changing--the clouds and ocean in constant motion and the dynamic nature of the atmosphere.

Pike's Place Market

In the past, I have posted paintings from my travel to Seattle. It was a city that really captured my imagination. My time there was marked by relaxed evenings sipping wine on a balcony in Capital Hill, adventuring to the Ballard neighborhood to check out Seattle's cupcake selection, making an excursion to Bainbridge Island, and exploring tourist favorites, like Pike's Place. This postcard painting (literally) was made sitting in a coffee shop adjacent to the market and mailed across the country. The painting's recipient recently sent me a digital copy of this forgotten image. There is a certain desirable quality to this sketch-like painting, a quality sometimes elusive in my typically controlled painting style.

Fonda, Iowa

I spent five days this week in west central Iowa, for a family reunion. We were visiting, Fonda, IA, the town where my Grandmother grew up. It is a quaint town of about 600 residents. My grandmother, Bernadine often told us stories of Fonda. She moved away from Iowa as a teenager, after her father's death, and lived in Southern California by the time I knew her. Stories of the pit where they would swim, the Linnan family house with a beautiful porch, and life in small town Iowa came to life with the assistance of my Grandmother's garrulous nature! It was lovely to visit and paint this church in Fonda. The stillness and quiet of Fonda were a delightful retreat for a city-dweller.

Yes and Yes Blog

My work was recently featured on the Yes and Yes Blog as part of the Great Birthday Giveaway. My friend Emily introduced me to this blog about a month ago and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Sarah Von's extraordinary dedication to adventure speaks to my own wanderlust and ongoing exploration of my city. She inspires with me posts such as how to travel on the cheap and how to pack a backpack for six months and still look great!

Tulip Invitation

I think tulips are perhaps my favorite flower. I remember being completely taken by the variety and plenty of tulips on a visit to the Netherlands. They strike me as beautiful without pretentiousness.
